Being the last day of work before the tenant shows up, it was the final push. Not everything was done.
I knew that there wouldn’t be enough trim boards, so I urethaned a bunch more. The work area:
Floyd came by as I was urethaning. (Is that a word?)
The living room trim was complete. The patch piece still needs seam seal.
Some of them were painted white to match the trim in the rear (3rd) bedroom.
The wood trim under the stairs was complete. A slot had to be cut to accommodate the cold air return vent.
Next major task: install kitchen / mudroom door. Acoustic sealant was laid first. A piece of wood was placed under the threshold. It, for some reason, is always left empty, leaving a chance that it would sag over time.
The door was inserted, levelled, fastened in with screws under the weather stripping strips (yes, I know, an unnecessary redundancy … get it?), and spray foam insulated (another Canadian Tire trip). The excess was cut off, or rather pulled off as it was not yet cured, to allow for trim board.
Then came the counter fiasco. I attempted to create a block and clamp thing.
It was an absolute disaster. We ended up just putting spanning pieces of 5/8″ plywood across both countertop pieces, held in with brads and screws. I should have taken a picture of its completed form, but I was too frustrated and distraught with the whole affair. Time was running out, and there were still many things to do.
Next, we cut a hole for the sink. The sink stood too high by a quarter inch, seemingly held up by the plumbing, and nothing seemed to keep it down. The sink clamps were either broken or extremely tight to turn. Dave brought in some heavy rocks and weighted it down to keep the silicone stuck.
After that, the kitchen window. I pulled the exterior trim boards off and prepped it for flashing tape. As this is an outside job, it will wait until the suite is completed on the inside.
I pulled off the rotten interior trim boards. Floyd says we actually installed these. I’ll paint some more 1x4s white tomorrow and use them as trim.
I moved most of our tools, equipment, and materials upstairs. I’ll do the rest in the morning. The pantry, which was converted into a tool room, is now mostly empty.
Before I left, I plugged in the ozone generator. The pantry still smells like cat pee. Not yet move-in ready.
Still to do inside the suite:
- BR1 ceiling boards
- kitchen window interior trim
- fasten countertop
- removal of rest of work stuff
- clean suite
- seam seal living room, under stairs flooring
Still to do outside (connected to the main suite):
- remove junk from side of building
- remove wood & dresser from veranda
- veranda: jack, add footings, rebuild floor
- kitchen window: seal, add trim
